Thomas Partey’s representatives has denied claims that they are negotiating with Premier League club Arsenal over the transfer of the Atletico Madrid ace.
Media reports went rife on Wednesday that, the Atletico Madrid midfielder’s move to the Premier League will happen at the end of the season after his father, Jacob Partey confirmed in an interview that his son has been in contract talks with the London-based team.
“I called my son after hearing the rumours and he told me that the rumours are true,” said Jacob Partey. “He told me they are holding talks between him and Arsenal. It all depends on the offer Atletico are demanding,” he told Tru FM.
“If he goes to Arsenal, fine, they have a lot of supporters in Ghana. I will be happy if he decides to move to Arsenal. What they are discussing now is how Atletico will release him.”
But JJ Sports, who represent the 26-year-old, have issued a denial and are quoted as telling Marca: “It’s totally untrue.”
Mikel Arteta is reportedly holding out for a defensive midfielder to help protect Arsenal’s shaky defence, with Lucas Torreira and Co struggling to nail down a regular starting spot.
Arteta is said to be impressed with the defensive midfielder and believes Partey will be able to bolster his own team in that area.
Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid are looking to ward off interest from Arsenal by giving Thomas Partey a new deal with a £93million release clause.
The Ghanaian midfielder has become a key figure at the Wanda Metropolitano this season, featuring 35 times across all competitions to help Atletico reach the Champions League quarter-finals.
There is plenty of interest in his signature and at present, the Ghanaian’s release clause is £47m.
However, Partey still has three years remaining on his contract with Atletico.
