French President Emmanuel Macron is supposedly urging other top leagues around Europe to follow suit.
But Italian football chief Gabriele Gravina is adamant that he will not cancel the season with 12 games remaining for most clubs.
Top flight outfits are due to return to training on May 18 but the country’s sport minister Vincenzo Spadafora maintains that does not necessarily mean the season will return.
Juventus are currently top of Serie A with a one point lead over Lazio and Inter Milan a further eight behind.
At the other end of the table seven points separate Sassuolo in 11th from Lecce in 18th meaning plenty still rides on the campaign.
Italy have seen over 27,900 die as a result of coronavirus with over 205,000 confirmed cases of Covid-19.
The Premier League has signalled its intent to resume matches on June 8.
Leicester’s 4-0 win over Aston Villa on March 9 was the competition’s last game.
Even if matches do return they are likely to be played behind closed doors with some EFL clubs reportedly told that next season could begin in a similar fashion.
