Bankroller of Division One League Club Tema Youth, Wilfred Osei Kwaku Palmer has insisted that autonomous league does not exist anywhere
The Ghana Football Association early this month announced that they have commenced plans to make the Premier League independent.
The domestic top-flight championship is currently run by the Premier League Management Committee of the GFA, who replaced the Premier League Board (PLB) last year.
A statement read: The Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has taken a decision to make the Ghana Premier League autonomous.
In light of this decision, the Executive Council, at its meeting on Tuesday, May 5, 2020, has decided to form a 5-member Committee to advise the GFA on how to proceed with the implementation of the Policy.
The Premier League Autonomy Committee will be made up of 3 persons nominated by the 18-Premier League Clubs with the other two to be added by GFA.
This special task committee will advise the GFA on the autonomy of the league, the format, the modalities, start date and rulebook, among other parameters.
But Osei Palmer speaking to Happy FM claims there is no country where the league is independently run. The former GFA Presidential aspirant also can’t fathom why the country’s football governing body will be thinking of commercialising the Ghana Premier League amid the Covid-19 crisis.
“It is only in Ghana that we want to run an autonomous league. It does not exist anywhere of which we want to start for the first time”
“Will you commercialized at this critical moment of the novel Convid-19? Economic activities has been granted to a halt due to the disease so I think this is not the time to even think about autonomous league”.
Meanwhile, Ghana Premier League clubs have nominated Board chairman of Accra Hearts of Oak, Togbe Afede XIV as one of three representatives for the autonomous Premier League.
The two others are Mr John Ansah, Operations Manager of Cape Coast Mysterious Ebusua Dwarfs Football Club and Delali Senaye, the CEO of Inter Allies Football Club.
The GFA is expected to complete the 5-member Committee by naming its 2 representatives in the coming days.
