Guinean import Naby Keita believes the competition for striking berths can only be a good thing for Asante Kotoko.
Keita is relishing the competition for the striking spot with new arrival Kwame Poku.
Kwame Poku joined the Porcupines from Nkoranza Warriors on a three-year deal in February.
According to Keita, the arrival of the 21-year is for the good of the team as he will be aiding to fill up the void left by the Songne Yacouba whose contract with Kotoko expired last month.
“It will be very difficult for me with his presence at the club. If a club has many strikers you always work hard to be picked but if you are one or two you will be reluctant towards your training because you always know you’d be selected,” Keita is quoted by Kotoko Express.
“Kwame [Poku] is a very good striker. The first time I saw him I was very happy for him as a striker. Yacouba who was one of our best strikers is no more with us so we have to show the supporters that we can be like him or even better.
Keita added that despite former Nkoranza Warriors striker’s qualities he his not scared of him.
“The team is not about only Keita or Kwame [Poku] rather all of us so I am not scared of Kwame’s arrival because the coach is always looking at all of us so I am not scared.
“It is all about working hard because it is the coach who looks at our performance at training and selects who is to play.”
Meanwhile, Former Asante Kotoko striker Eric Bekoe has challenged Kwame Opoku to score more than his 42 goals for the Porcupines.
Bekoe played for the Ghana Premier League record-holders between 2007 to 2008 where he impressively netted 42 goals in 48 appearances in all competitions.
For more than a decade no striker of the Porcupines have been able to beat Eric Bekoe’s record and he has thrown a challenge to the former Nkoranza Warriors striker to overtake him.
“I have watched some videos of Kwame Opoku and I am communicating with him. I have given him a target because I want a player who will beat my Kotoko record”, Eric Bekoe told Vision 1 FM.
“I even told him to wear my favorite number 42 jersey because it has been abandoned for a long time. Per his video, I think he needs some finishing touches.”
