Former Ghana midfielder Laryea Kingson believes CK Akonnor has what it takes to succeed as the coach of the Black Stars.
CK Akonnor in early January was appointed as Black Stars coach on a two-year contract. The former Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko gaffer has been tasked to win the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations and also qualify the team to the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup.
According to the former Hearts of Oak midfielder, CK Akonnor is the right man for the job and has gone through the ranks gives him an added advantage.
“I think he has what it takes [to coach Black Stars]. I think it is a good choice. He played in the national team, he captained the team. He has been in the shoes before. I hope Ghana gives him a long term contract,” Laryea Kingston told Joy FM.
Kingson once played under CK Akonnor who then was the coach of Accra Hearts of Oak and he claims the latter has a good rapport with his players which will aim him in his new chapter.
I played under CK and I worked with him in Tamale during the renaming of the Aliu Mahama Stadium. We have worked at Right to Dream as well. I think Right to Dream academy developed him. His relationship with players is amazing.”
He also noted that Akonnor players’ selection into the Black Stars set up should be based on merit.
“What I want to see is players picked if they are doing well for their clubs.”
