Barcelona have officially appointed Ronald Koeman as their new manager after the club sacked Quique Setien.
Former manager Quique Setien was sacked following their humiliating 8-2 loss to Bayern Munich in their Champions League quarter-final.
Setien wasn’t the only person shown the door as sporting director, Eric Abidal, also left.
In a short statement on the club’s official website, Barcelona broke the news.
“FC Barcelona and Ronald Koeman have reached an agreement for the Dutchman to take over as first team coach until 30 June 2022.
“The presentation and subsequent press conference for the new Barça coach will take place today from 6.00pm CEST at the Auditori 1899.”
The club also announced Ramon Planes as the new technical director. He was the assistant to Eric Abidal, who left his role as sporting director on Tuesday.
On Tuesday, club president Josep Maria Bartomeu admitted that the Dutchman was close to being appointed.
“Koeman is the one we’ve chosen. If nothing goes wrong he will be the head coach next season,” he said.
I’d like to, but it’ll only be confirmed once I’ve signed the deal.
“Until then, I cannot say any more about it – even though I’d like to.”
But now, the contract has been signed and Koeman is officially Barca’s next manager.
