The National Democratic Congress (NDC) have accused the Electoral Commission (EC), the National Identification Authority (NIA) President Akufo-Addo of conspiring to rig the 2020 elections.
The NDC in a press briefing address by their National Chairman Samuel Ofosu Ampofo on May 14, 2020, said they will stamp their feet on the grounds to ensure that does not happen.
Mr Ampofo said the EC’s plan to use the Ghana Card for the compilation of the new Voters’ Register is part of a grand scheme to disenfranchise people in NDC stronghold.
“The move to use the Ghana Card for the voters register forms part of a grand scheme to disenfranchise persons in NDC stronghold and the Jean Mensa administration is pushing for that to help the New Patriotic Party, only 7 million out of 11 million who have so far registered for the Ghana card have received theirs.
He said there is also a clear plan by the EC, NIA and the President to rig the election.
“Clearly the conspiracy between Akufo-Addo, the National Identification Authority, the Electoral Commission to rig the 2020 general elections is the kind of conspiracy that has sent many countries into chaos and instability. We of the NDC do not wish this for our dear country hence our constant warnings.”
The issues concerning the New Voters’ Register seem never to die off but Director of Electoral Services at the Electoral Commission (EC) Dr Serebour Quaicoe, says there is still a possibility that the current Voters’ Register will be used for the 2020 elections.
The EC since last year has justified why they need to compile a new register for the 2020 general elections.
The EC has said it wants to ensure that the register that is used on the election day is more credible and efficient than the existing one hence the need for a new Biometric Voter Management System (BVMS).
The EC initially scheduled April 18, 2020, for the compilation of the new Voters’ Register ahead of the December 2020 elections but following the rapid spread of the novel coronavirus in the country it was postponed and a new date has not been announced.
