Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia says there is a strong reason for an airport in Cape Coast than in Ho.
The Vice President speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo show said it will be important for Cape Coast to have an airport as that will yield more economic impact that what is situated at Ho.
His comments come on the back of NPP’s promise during their manifesto launch that they will be building an airport at Cape Coast in the Central Region.
Some have disagreed with this promise as they believe building an airport at Cape Coast is a misplaced priority.
Dr Bawumia, however, is of the view that Cape Coast is the hub of tourism and getting an airport will generate more revenue for Ghana.
“I think the people of Central Region deserve an airport, in fact, there is more of a case for an airport in Cape Coast than in Ho but I didn’t see any resistance towards that. In terms of tourist potential, Cape Coast is bigger even though having an airport in Ho is also good but in the economic case, Cape Coast is much stronger”
He also said due to the amount of traffic the region records, it will be prudent to build an airport to ease that pressure on other means of transport.
“If you are talking of tourism you can’t leave out Cape Coast, it is the tourism capital of Ghana. With education, today Cape Coast is the education capital, so the amount of traffic in terms of people that travel to Cape Coast is quite significant, so you have to look at how infrastructure will boost the economy. Tourist like convenience so if I can fly to the place and not on a 3-hour journey to the place then it is in the right step.
The Ho Airport in the Volta Region was constructed in 2015 by the NDC government.
An aviation expert Dr Yakubu Akparibo, however, has outlined a plethora of reasons why the construction of an airport in Cape Coast will not be a viable option for the country as of now.
According to the Aerospace Medicine Physician, most of the conditions that would serve as a basis for the citing of such a facility in the Central Region are non-existent.
