John Boadu the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), says the President’s directive to lift the lockdown of Accra and Kumasi is not to pave way for political activities.
There were several accusations from the National Democractic Congress (NDC) that the lockdown was lifted purposely to allow the Electoral Commission start the compilation of a new voters’ register.
Sammy Gyamfi Communications Director of the NDC said “It is clearly politically- motivated decision, calculated to allow the EC the space to undertake its entranced and illogical determination to compile a new voter’s register for the 2020 General Elections and nothing more”,
Mr Boadu however think this is just political mischief and the lifting of the ban has nothing to do with politics.
“There is no way anybody who is objective who is just not playing any mischief will think President Akufo-Addo’s decision to lift the lockdown of Accra and Kumasi is to pave way for political activities
He also said the new Voter’s Register is a necessity and could begin by May ending.
He believes this is the only way to ensure Ghana has a credible 2020 general elections.
The EC initially scheduled April 18, 2020, for the compilation of the new voters’ register ahead of the December 2020 elections but following the rapid spread of the novel coronavirus in the country it was postponed and a new date has not been announced.
They have on several occasions explained that Ghana needs a new Voters’ Register because it wants to ensure that the register that is used on the election day is more credible and efficient than the existing one hence the need for a new Biometric Voter Management System (BVMS).
