Some traders who have lost their properties at Kantamanto market say they had information prior to the 2020 election that the market would be set ablaze.
Fire has gutted the sowing section of the Kantamanto market in Accra’s central business district.
The fire reportedly started around 10 pm on Tuesday, December 15, 2020.
By 10:20 pm, the fire had gone out of control and some onlookers ran to the nearby fire station to request help.
Fire service personnel reportedly got to the fire station at around 11 pm.
The firefighters have helpd douse the fire that has so far destroyed many goods including clothes.
They have stopped the blaze from spreading and are still trying to quench the blaze.
Some of the traders speaking to Joy News said they are heartbroken and are calling on the government to come to their aid.
A leader at the market said there were rumours prior to the election that this incident would happen.
“Two weeks to the election we heard this place would burn, so we quickly alerted the authorities, they told us to calm down and they will find out the truth but this is what has happened and we have lost lots of money.”
It remains unclear what may have started the fire.
A similar incident in that same enclave occurred last month with the Accra central branch of GCB Bank when one of the bank’s offices was razed.
