The Ga West Municipal Health Directorate in the Greater Accra Region has postponed the opening of the Ofankor Health Centre indefinitely.
The postponement comes in the wake of pressure on the nation’s premier health facility, Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, compelling the facility to halt referrals to the Surgical and Medical Emergency (SME) Unit.
The Ofankor Health Centre was to have been operational by the first week of July 2018, but due to the inability of the Assembly to raise the aforementioned amount, they were forced to postpone, until the said amount has been raised.
The health centre, which was constructed two years ago by the government with funding from the African Development Bank, has been closed to the public.
When open, it will serve residents at Ofankor, Asofa, Achimota, Abofu, Sowutwoum, Seven Days, Omanjo, Dwenewho, Mensah Addo, among others, in the Ga West Municipality of Accra in the Great Accra Region.
PrimeNewGhana on June 26, 2018, broke the news of the abandonment of the Health Centre, which compelled the Member of Parliament for Trobu Constituency, Moses Anim, whose constituency the Ofankor Health Centre is situated, to act on the issue.
He earlier promised the centre would be opened to the public in August 2018 but the Assembly later came to explained it would be opened on July instead.
At the time PrimeNewsGhana broke the news, some suspected thieves had taken advantage of stealing the fixed air-conditions while dust had taken over portions of the Health Centre.
The Ofankor health facility is part of numerous health facilities that although have been completed have not been functioning.
