The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has announced that the cost for the acquisition and renewal of the new Smart Drivers License remains at the old GHC64 instead of the new GHC91 stipulated.

Speaking in an interview Tuesday, the Director in charge of driving, training, testing and licensing at the DVLA, Cheyuo Wienna Musa explained that the Ghc 91price mentioned was an introductory price and will not apply in the rollout which begins November 7, 2017.

“Last month, we withdrew the Ghc91 price completely and broadcasted that the said price shall no longer be applied and the new license will be issued at the old price. The GHc91 will therefore not apply until next year when we come to a decision after discussions with the finance minister and other stakeholders, and we agree to a price that is applicable enough”, he said.

He noted that drivers who come to apply for the new license or to renew their licenses from Tuesday will pay an amount of Ghc 64 which is the same old cost.

A group of drivers known as the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana attempted to demonstrate against the newly issued Smart Driver’s license due to the high cost of acquiring it. Their plan was however curtailed as Police did not support the move due to its nature and a possible disturbance to commuters.

The digital drivers’ license is part of government’s efforts to remove the human interface from the process of issuing new licenses.

It will also make use of the latest technology for secure ID printing that can be easily integrated with other systems of the DVLA.
