The Ghana Prison Service has issued a meningitis alert to some prisons in the country after reported cases of meningitis outbreak in some Senior High Schools.
According to the Prison Service, the alert is to help the various prisons be on the lookout for signs and symptoms of meningitis to prevent a possible outbreak at the various prisons.
The PRO of the Service, Superintendent Vitalis Aiyeh said the alert has been issued to prisons in the Brong Ahafo and the three regions of the North.
He said steps are already in place to prevent an outbreak in this harmattan season.
Congestion and heat have been identified as the some of the primary causes of meningitis outbreak.
A total of five deaths have been recorded due to the outbreak of meningitis, Koforidua SHS, Damango SHS in the Northern Region, Bawku Secondary Technical, Tempane SHS, and Zuarungu, all in the Upper East Region are among Senior High Schools that have recorded deaths due to the outbreak.
