Foreign Affairs Minister-nominee Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey has stated that she did not sign up for national service after graduating from her tertiary education.
Addressing the Appointment committee in Parliament today January 23 2017, during her vetting session, she said, “I did not do national service…”
According to her, the law that compels every graduate from tertiary institutions to serve the nation came into force a year after she graduated.
“The law came into effect a year after I left school”, she said among other things.
All Ghanaian students who complete tertiary education are by law required to complete a year’s service to the nation.
National Service was introduced to prepare graduates to the realities of life during their working period.
Graduates who have completed any tertiary institution in the country who fail to do national service can be arrested and prosecuted.
