A kind gesture towards the construction of the non-denominational National Cathedral project by National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, has stirred a bitter debate on social media since Thursday, August 26, 2021.
On Thursday, the revered Islamic cleric donated GH¢50,000 towards the project when the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral, Apostle Opoku Onyinah, led a delegation to pay a courtesy call on him.
While making the donation, the Chief Imam said through his spokesperson, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu, that he was confident that the money will aid the speedy construction of the mammoth edifice.
While the donation has been hailed as a major boost for the consolidation of peaceful co-existence between Muslims and Christians in Ghana, others have said the money should have been donated to a better cause like building infrastructure in deprived Muslim communities.
The different opinions that the donation has sparked according to other commentators on social media platforms Facebook and Twitter are based on disillusionment among a section of Ghanaians in the government and the project.
Others, however, believe Muslim critics of the donation are being ungrateful because the Christian community has always donated in support of Islamic causes.
Below are some of the varied comments the donation has elicited on Twitter.
