Asantehene cancels curfew for Asantehemaa’s funeral

The Manhyia Palace has rescinded its decision to impose a curfew throughout Kumasi in the Ashanti Region as part of the final funeral rites of the late Asantehemaa, Nana Afia Kobi Serwah Ampem II, scheduled for Saturday, 9 December 2017.

The new arrangement which came upon the advice of Asantehene Otumfuor Osei Tutu II was announced at a press conference Tuesday by Otumfuo Kyeamehene, Nana Nsuase Poku Agyeman III.

Nana Nsuase Poku Agyeman III said some residents within some areas would still have to remain indoors during the special ceremony on the night of Saturday, 9 December, to pave the way for the special ceremony where the Asantehene and Asantehema will send “Abusua Kuruwa” to Breman.

The affected residents are those living around the Manhyia Palace through Traffic Light, Apagyafiem, Dr. Mensah to Kejetia, the stretch from Kejetia through Suame Roundabout to Breman.

According to him, Otumfuo has also directed the committee to reverse its earlier decision for all stores and shops within the Kumasi metropolis to be closed on Monday, 4 December, and Tuesday, 5 December, where traditional wailing and firing of muskets from the Manhyia Palace to Adum, will take place.

He indicated that the Asante monarch did not want to inconvenience his people as Christmas draws near, and, therefore, directed the committee to reverse the earlier decision and allow his people to trade on the said dates.

However, stores and shops within the streets of Pampaso to Kejetia project, Dr. Mensah, S.A.T, Apagyafiem, Krofrom Road to Manhyia Palace, will be closed in the morning of Monday, 4 December and Tuesday, 5 December, for the special ceremony to be performed.

The final funeral rite of the late Asantehemaa, Nana Afia Kobi Serwah Ampem II, has been slated for December 1 – 11.

Nana Afia Kobi Serwah Ampem II died on Monday, 14 November 2016 at age 111 after reigning for 39 years. She has since been buried.

She was the mother of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

She has been succeeded by her own 83-year-old daughter, Nana Konadu Yiadom III.
