Rioting residents of Akyem Abekoase in the Atiwa District of the Eastern region have set aflame excavators, generators and new mining equipment worth $1.5 million belonging to Adjei-Dankwa Investment.
What brought about the violent riot action of the gun, machete-wielding youth numbering over 200
is uncertain. The angry protestors kidnapped the security man on duty before the burning spree.
Meanwhile information reaching Primenewsghana.com indicate the residents were incensed by information that the company did not have a general permit to operate.
CEO of the mining company, Patrick Adjei-Dankwah, has refuted claims the firm has no license to operate. According to him, the company acquired the concession legally in 2014 with 20 more, and has permit to operate from the Minerals Commission and the Atiwa District.
Mr Adjei is surprised the youth would take such an action when the company has spend about GH¢50, 000 as part of its corporate social responsibilities in the community.
He appealed to the security agencies and the government bring the perpetrators to justice.
