Some six Chinese nationals have been arrested for illegal mining in Pokukrom in the Ashanti Region.
They have been transfered to the Kumasi Central Police Headquarters for possession.
Four excavators were retrieved and sent to Kumasi as well.
Mr Twum Agyekum member of the Sustainable Land and Water management task force says they are bent on clamping down on illegal mining which destroys lands and water bodies.
“This is something we are doing to sanitize people, we are here to stop individuals parading as security personnel to rob legitimate miners of their produce. We are also here to stop the destruction of streams by Chinese nationals supported by Ghanaians.”
Galamsey activities has had many negative effects on the Ghanaian society.
In summary, mining has a negative impact on the environment including erosion, formation of sinkholes, loss of biodiversity, contamination of soil, groundwater and surface water
In February this year Operation Vanguard the anti-galamsey operation task force were ordered to withdraw from all illegal mining areas in the country with immediate effect.
There were reports that this development came about as a result of the recent backlash from the public against the Military, allegations of bribery in the fight against illegal mining, the lack of confidence from the public among others.
