The three South African ex-police officers arrested at the El-Capitano Hotel at Agona Duakwa in the Central region on Sunday for training private security personnel of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential Candidate, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his running mate Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, have been charged with conspiracy to commit crime, unlawful training and false declaration.
But New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Samuel Atta Akyea, has brushed off the charges against the trio predicting that the charges would fail in court.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Thursday, he said, “The charges are very watery, military training is when soldiers are training. So this is a civilian training; civilians who are trying to learn how to protect VIPs. I do not see how you will be able to succeed with such a charge”.
He further stated that since the three South African nationals declared their intention with Ghana’s mission in South Africa before entering the country, the charge of false declaration was also likely to be rejected by the court.
Mr Atta Akyea, supported the NPP’s justification for bringing the trio saying Akufo-Addo is just being wise about his personal security.
“It will be unwise for him to be marking time to be protected. When it is about a month to the elections that is when the official sense of security awakens, that is frightening….very frightening”, he told host, Kojo Yankson.
“I don’t see why someone should say we will provide you security as and when we want it, what is the meaning of that? The man is very conscious of the fact that anything can happen. So if a man is wise and is saying that I won’t lie down for anything to happen to me so let me get civilians who have a sense of VIP protection to help me out, what is the criminal issue about this”, he argued.
